Description
Alcohol oxidation. Oxidation of a primary alcohol (ethanol) by potassium manganate (VII) solution (also known as potassium permanganate, KMnO4, purple, left). The manganate is a strong oxidizing agent that is reduced when it reacts, forming a colourless solution (right). The primary alcohol (ethanol) turns into a carboxylic acid (ethanoic acid).
