Description
Blaeu's world map. 1606 map of the world, published in Amsterdam by the Dutch cartographer Willem Blaeu (1571-1638). The title and labels are in Latin. The voyages of Christopher Columbus (1492) and Amerigo Vespucci (1499) are mentioned at upper left. Australia and Antarctica have yet to be discovered. In the lower corners are maps of the northern and southern polar regions. A dedicatory cartouche (lower right) gives the publication year. Border artworks show the Sun, Moon and five known planets (top), the four elements (left), the four seasons (right), and the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (bottom).
