Description
Ramesseum, Egypt, aerial view. The Ramesseum was built around 1258 BC as a memorial temple for the Pharaoh Ramses II. Most of the temple lies in ruins as it was built within the floodplain of the Nile river. Several large columns at centre are decorated with large statues of Ramses II. At bottom centre are the remains of the Colossus of Ramses II, a huge granite statue that once stood 17 metres tall and weighed around 1000 tons. Surrounding the temple is a complex of small mudbrick granaries, storerooms and smaller temples. The mountain al-Qurn is seen at top left, behind it is the Valley of the Kings, where the tomb of Ramses II is located.
